Local government employers​

Local government employers promotes the interests of Finland's municipalities and joint municipal authorities on the labour market.

Finland has 336 municipalities and 145 joint municipal authorities. These local authorities employ about 434 000 employees, a fifth of Finland's employed labour force. 
 
Local and joint authorities vary as to their importance as employers. Half of them employ 250 persons at the most.

  • comprehensive schools, upper secondary schools,
    vocational institutions, polytechnics,
  • day care centres, youth affairs centres
  • libraries, museums,
  • homes for the elderly,
  • local traffic and fire and rescue departments.
