Local Authority Employers in Finland
Finland has 342 municipalities and 148 joint municipal authorities. These local authorities employ about 433 000 employees, a fifth of Finland's employed labour force.
Local and joint authorities vary as to their importance as employers. Half of them employ 250 persons at the most.
Local government employers are for instance hospitals, health centres, comprehensive schools, upper secondary schools, vocational institutions, polytechnics, day care centres, libraries, museums, homes for the elderly, youth affairs centres, local traffic and fire and rescue departments.
The Commission for Local Authority Employers promotes the interests of Finland's municipalities and joint municipal authorities on the labour market.
